Javelin Wins The 2009 Schumacher Cup on San Francisco Bay

Javelin took first place in the Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay's 2009 second half opener for the handicap racing season in Northern California on July 25th. Javelin, a Santa Cruz 37, skippered by Norm Davant & Pat Nolan and sailing under the St Francis Yacht Club burgee, won the Annual Schumacher Cup for monohulls in the race.

Sailing against over 70 other boats Javelin was second to finish and corrected out first in class and first overall in the 22 mile race.

The race started in 12 to knots of wind against a strong flood tide off of Treasure Island down by the bay bridge. The winds continued to build to reaching 16 knots true on the long beat west underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Javelin proved her upwind speed holding off the pair of Farr 40's on the long beat out to Anita only slightly overtaken by one of them a little before the weather mark outside the bridge. The winds diminished a bit as the fleet headed to a mark just outside of San Francisco Bay marking the north entrance to the bay called Pt. Bonita.

After rounding the Pt. Bonita buoy in second place boat for boat, Javelin's crew of 8 held off Viva, one of the best Melges 32's on west coast. Javelin beat Viva downwind by over five minutes on the long run back.

Congratulations to Norm & Pat, and the crew of Javelin.

A Fast and Fun Week on threebeans in Long Island Sound

Christoper Rosow and his family, along with freinds spent a week sailing on Long Island Sound, proving their SC 37 threebeans is not only a fast racer, but a fun cruising platform. From a two-family overnight cruise in well-appointed comfort, to an exciting race with double-digit boatspeeds as the norm, capped off by a day race, getting kids into sailing, while going fast with ease.  Indeed, while the words might tell the story, the smiles truly show what it's all about.

Learning Fast In the Doublehanded Round Block Island Race

Christoper Rosow and crew Gerry Pearce learned a lot about sailing Christopher's new SC 37 threebeans in the 2009 Round Block Island race. And they did it doublehanded.

"While there's no substitute for practice, Christopher says, there's also something to a trial by fire-throw a race at the boat and see what happens in race conditions. We now have the confidence that when we point threebeans in the right direction, and keep her pointed that way without rinsing off the spreaders thanks to our mismanagement of her sails, she will take good care of us. The SC-37 is truly a remarkable boat." Read all of Christopher's story on the rest of the race, click here.

Cruzin' with the cats in the Border Run

In the innaugrual Border Run in southern California Jeff Brown's SC 37 spent more time sailing with the catamarans than the rest of the monohulls in PHRF class B. Brown and crew finished first across the line completing the course in 8:42:24, and at 8:04:00, finished just two minutes forty five seconds out of first place corrected.

The Border Run is a new exciting sailing event presented by XS-Racing that attracted both novice and expert sailors alike. With inclusion and growing the sport as their rallying cry, The Border Run allows all classes and sailors to participate. The race started on April 24 from Newport Beach Harbor, ending in San Diego for a distance of 69nm.

"Overall, the boat performance was wonderful, plus great company made the inaugural race for the new Santa Cruz 37 just perfect," said crew member David Servais. Read the rest of his story, click here.

Javelin-Class of the Party in the Great Vallejo Race

Racing against 235 monohulls in the annual Vallejo race Pat Nolan's SC 37 Javelin had the fastest elapsed time for the race along with the best corrected time in their class. Javelin completed the 21.5nm course in 3:31:05 and had a corrected time of 3:57:47 taking first place.

The Great Vallejo Race, sponsored by the Vallejo Yacht Club, is a popular race for clubs in the San Francisco Bay and has been for over 100 years. The first mention of an organized race came in 1925, when PICYA (Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association) organized a cruise to Vallejo on a Saturday, to be followed by a race back on Sunday. This is probably the official origin of the Great Vallejo Race, now reputed to be the largest inland regatta in the United States, drawing from 300 to 500 boats annually. Now under the aegis of the Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco Bay, it is a two-day race that marks the official opening of the Bay's racing season. The race starts near the Berkeley Circle on Saturday morning, rounds a single weather mark near Alcatraz, and then heads to Vallejo, usually under spinnaker for the remainder of the race.

Planing In England

From our dealer Key Yachting in England-The owner of the SC37 SoniC is has a big grin on today. Whilst out on the Solent yesterday he and his crew of 7 clocked 21.8 knots on only the second time out. Yeee-haaa!

The happy SC37 owner tells me that they popped the kite up in 20 to 25 knots of breeze and hit this top speed at 32 knots TWS. He said that they were sailing very deep at the time, in 3 feet waves and were planing not surfing. He also said that he wasn't heating the boat up at all and that there is definitely more to come from the boat.

Raymarine Warsash Spring Series in England

The Raymarine Warsash Spring Series got underway on Sunday 15th March 2009. The sun shone under a blue sky for the 166 boats entered for the first race day. In the mild conditions, only the wind was reluctant to appear which made this introduction to the new season an excellent challenge, as crews coaxed their craft along searching for every little patch of breeze.

IRC 1

On the Black Group committee boat, David Greenway and his race officers out in the mid Solent waited for the light westerly to settle sufficiently to set a fair course. At 1035 IRC1 got off to a clean start, heading across the Bramble Bank to West Knoll buoy and a new windward mark was laid just north of Air Canada buoy for the remaining four classes.

The first beat to West Knoll (against a strong tide and in a dying breeze) proved tactically challenging and for some and brain-achingly frustrating for others. In IRC1, Ian Matthews in his J/122 Jinja opted to sneak up the south side of Brambles Bank along with Stewart Hawthorn's new Santa Cruz 37 SoniC, helmed for this first race of the series by Paul Bayliss. As the breeze dwindled to virtually zero at the top of the beat, SoniC's light carbon construction paid dividends and she managed to hold just enough puff to keep her slipping nicely though the water as Jinja slowed to a standstill.

First to arrive at the mark, SoniC's rounding was foiled when hit by the wake from a huge passing motorboat and Jinja, SoniC and Jackie and Robert Dobson's J/133 Jeronimo were all forced to kedge against the tide.

Meanwhile, John Patterson skilfully chose to hug the mainland shore upwind on his J/122 Panacea and made good use of the zephyrs of land breeze before making the call to cut across the tide, rounding the windward mark in pole position.

As the time limit approached a constant breeze finally came up from The Needles for the spinnaker reach down the shortened course to the finish. The team on SoniC chose their moment to gybe well and powered to the line just before 1400 ahead the rest of IRC 1 and took line honours for all of the fleets. As the top-rated boat in IRC1 SoniC slipped to third on handicap leaving a well deserved win to John Patterson's J/122 Panacea.

"...this boat displays excellent sailing performance."-Sail Magazine Judges

SAIL Magazine announced the 2009 Best Boats Awards for Innovation and Excellence today at sailmagazine.com. and no surprise to us here, the SC 37 has been awarded Best Perfomance Boat for 2009.

SAIL's Best Boats team of judges, made up of Bill Springer (senior editor), Charles Doane (editor-at-large) and Nigel Calder (systems expert) examined the 2009 fleet of new sailboats debuting at the Newport and Annapolis boat shows in order to determine the most innovative and best designed sailboats of the year. "Given the high standard of modern boatbuilding, it was no easy task to narrow the field down to just a handful of deserving candidates," stated Bill Springer.

The SC 37 Hits Water And Wins Over the Crowd In Newport.

Over the course of the four days at the 2008 Newport International Boat the weather couldn't make up it's mind what to do-sunny, warm, and humid, one day cool and drizzling the next, then back.

But the crowd's enthusiasm for the new SC 37 started bright on day one and never dimmed. Everyone with an eye toward performance was excited about the carbon construction, deck layout, looks of the boat and the expectation for the race course. The big surprise was the reaction to the interior. Those with an eye toward a bit of comfort were pleasantly surprised at the level of the interior.

All of this was picked up on by judges for the Newport For New Products competition. We're proud to say they felt the same excitement that the crowd did for the boat and awarded it Best Sailboat in the show. Judges were also on board from Sailing World to judge for their Boat of the Year contest. After inspecting the boat at the dock, it was nominated, in the performance category. The next round for Boat of the Year moved on to Annapolis for more detailed judging and test sails.
